Large Louis XVI Portal Clock with Date and Seconds

Paris
Marble, fire-gilt bronze
Louis XVI c. 1790

Dimensions: H x W x D: 57 x 34 x 16 cm

Description:
Highly refined classical portal clock with detailed worked bronze and very attractive dial.

The curved white marble base is decorated with pearl bars, garlands of vines and cord frieze.
On top of the base we see a portal supported by four black marble columns, in the centre of which the clockwork is suspended.
The columns themselves stand on fire-gilded plinths and bases and end at the top with capitals that serve as suspension points for tassel ribbons as well as for large garlands of blossoms, fruits and leaves.
The upper end of the clock is formed by four urn vases framed by an openwork gallery and a central bowl containing a magnificent bouquet of further blossoms and leaves.

The high quality of the bronze work and the state of preservation of the original fire gilding should be emphasised. All bronze parts are finely chiselled and reveal individual leaf structures as well as, through bright and matt gilding, various materialities.

The "heart" of the clock is a French 14-day pendulum movement with Amant escapement -also called pin escapement or scissors escapement-, lock plate striking mechanism and cutting edge suspension of the pendulum.
The enamelled dial shows black numerals for the hours and quarter hours and red numerals for reading the date.
The original hand-sawn and filed hands are gold-plated for the time and blued for the date and seconds.
The attractive sun pendulum has adjustments on the back for fine tuning.

Condition:
The marble and all bronze parts have been cleaned and are in wonderful and authentic condition.
The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned and overhauled. It runs reliably and accurately.
