South German Baroque Commode with Central Lock

Southern Germany (Munich)
Walnut a.o.
Baroque around 1750

Dimensions: H x W x D: 83 x 109 x 55 cm

Description:
South German baroque chest of drawers in pleasing proportions.

Three-tier body standing on ball feet. The accentuated plinth and the discreet central curve of the front are typical of the region.
The walnut veneer is mostly laid diagonally, the resulting symmetries can be seen particularly impressively on the top panel. The banded marquetry in plum and bog oak is delineated by a thin maple thread and is complemented by the beautiful, original, fire-gilded fittings. The interplay of matt and bright gilding gives the fittings their very own, unmistakable character.

The fittings alone are collectible and rare, but the absolute highlight of the chest of drawers is the original central lock. This two-bolt box lock, which is installed in the centre drawer, closes upwards and downwards. This means that all three drawers are locked with just one key. This can be clearly seen in the attached video.

A very similar chest of drawers is known from Berchtesgaden Castle.

Condition:
Authentic and restored condition suitable for everyday use. The drawers run cleanly and smoothly, the lock works perfectly.

Price: This chest of drawers has already been sold. Comparable objects in terms of quality and age are priced at around 5500 to 6500.
