Inlay

Inlay is the term we use to describe work in which, unlike marquetry, material is removed from a solid piece of wood. The inlays are then inserted. The inlays are usually made of different coloured woods or non-wood materials, such as pewter or ivory.

Inlays are found on antique furniture in geometric, ornamental or figurative forms.
