Palmette

A palmette is a vegetal ornament originating from Egyptian antiquity with symmetrically fan-like arranged leaves.

Napoleon Bonaparte brought numerous motifs from Egyptian culture back to Europe from his Egyptian campaigns, so that furniture from the beginning of the 19th century in particular, i.e. from the Empire and Biedermeier periods, was often decorated with palmettes, caryatids or similar.
