Rocaille

The rocaille is a curved shell ornament. It is the main ornament used in the Rococo period and can be found on many pieces of furniture from this period.

The rocaille was carved as a crown, inlaid on surfaces or cast in bronze for fittings. With its asymmetrical form, it dissolved the austerity of the Baroque.

Apart from antique furniture, we find the rocaille in architecture as stucco work for castle and church decoration.
