Cherry, plum and others
Classicism around 1785
Dimensions: H x W x D: 90 x 130 x 59 cm
Description:
Three-tier piece of furniture with impressive inlay work, standing on pointed legs.
The body parts are veneered in cherry wood, the fronts of the drawers in plum wood. Pieces of wood arranged in a herringbone pattern divide the two lower drawers into three sections each, which in turn are separated by fine fillet bands.
The front of the upper drawer is spectacularly designed, also framed by diagonally arranged pieces of wood and featuring a frieze of light and dark contrasting woods. The skilful arrangement of the timbers and the choice of a plain background make it appear as if the timbers protrude three-dimensionally from the front.
The design of the front is continued in a similar way on the sides and in a much simpler form on the top.
The pilaster strips are provided with indicated fluting, which is continued on the legs.
Louis XVI chests of drawers with geometric marquetry appear more frequently in the art trade, but such elaborate inlay work as can be seen here is absolutely rare.
If we pull out the top drawer, the chest of drawers is revealed to be a writing desk. The front is held on the outside by wrought-iron hooks and can be folded forwards. By pulling out the inserted top, the writing and work surface can be significantly enlarged and also offers the user an enlarged foot space.
Four small drawers keep the secretary compartment organised.
Conclusion: The chest of drawers is not only outstanding in its workmanship, but also really ingenious in its use.
