A pilaster is a wall pillar used in place of a voluminous column, found on the pilasters of antique cupboards and chests of drawers.
Pilasters have a rectangular cross-section and are often bordered at the top and bottom by capitals and bases.
The shaft is the central, elongated element of a column. It is delimited from above by a capital and from below by a base.
Columns can be found on antique furniture from almost every era. They flank the drawers of chests of drawers and writing furniture or actually have a supporting function in the form of table legs.
