Restoration of a Ladies' Secretary

Like most antique furniture, this French lady's secretary came to our workshop in an absolutely unrestored original condition. The wax polish was badly damaged and the walnut wood was faded. The leather on the writing surface had come loose in several places, but the substance was still quite good.

Parts of the back wall were missing, some constructive elements were broken. Unfortunately, not all the handles and fittings were still there either.

The drawers, if they were still in their guides at all, were so badly worn that they hooked and jammed. The keys were no longer available.

In the course of the restoration, the first thing we did was all the woodwork. Broken elements were re-glued, missing parts of the back wall were made new.
We cleaned the drawers and by straightening the runners they now run smoothly again.
Missing handles were replaced and keys were made.

A piece of furniture with patina

We washed off the old surface with spirit. This way, as much as possible of the very authentic patina could be preserved. Afterwards, quirks and bumps were puttied and colour-matched. After a light sanding, the wood was ready for the shellac polish, which makes the walnut look fresh and strong again.

We lightly refreshed the beautiful original leather with dark oil.
