Bahns, Jörn: Biedermeier furniture. Origin - Centres - Types.
Munich: Keyser, 1991
ISBN 3-87405-107-2

Jörn Bahns' compact handbook from the Keyser Collector's Library series offers a well-founded introduction to the development, regional diversity and typological differentiation of Biedermeier furniture. Based on cultural history, the author describes the stylistic replacement of the classicist-monumental Empire style by a bourgeois furniture aesthetic characterised by functionality, constructive clarity and simple elegance.

The volume conveys a differentiated picture of furniture production in various German and Central European centres around 1815-1848 and deals with typical furniture genres such as secretaries, cabinets and seating furniture. Particular attention is paid to the quality of craftsmanship, technical details and the stylistic development of individual types of furniture.

Thanks to its concise presentation and numerous pictorial examples, the work is suitable as introductory literature on the subject of Biedermeier furniture from the first half of the 19th century.
