Torsten Sylvén - Mästarnas Möbler - Stockholmsarbeten 1700–1850

Sylvén, Torsten: Mästarnas möbler. Stockholmsarbeten 1700-1850. Stockholm: Norstedts, 1996. ISBN 91-1-961272-9.

Torsten Sylvén's comprehensive work documents the golden age of furniture art in Stockholm from 1700 to 1850. Based on decades of research, the book analyses stylistic elements, decorative forms and technical details of furniture by selected masters of the Stockholm cabinetmakers' guild. Based on characteristic features, it is often possible to assign unsigned pieces to specific workshops.

In addition to a well-founded stylistic study of the craftsmanship, the volume offers an annotated list of cabinetmakers, foundrymen, intendants and others involved in furniture production, including name marks, labels and workshop notes. A separate chapter is devoted to analysing the apprentices' and journeymen's registers of the Stockholm joinery office (1700-1846). The rich illustrations - with numerous colour photographs and the author's own drawings - make the book an indispensable reference for the study of Swedish furniture art.
