This volume deals with the development of Italian furniture art over a period of around 500 years. The focus is on the comparison of two design trends: modern furniture with its roots in historical styles.
The concept is based on a direct comparison of historical and modern designs. Furniture is not viewed in isolation, but rather categorised in larger cultural and design contexts.
The content is organised thematically and includes contributions from several authors. These include Luigi Settembrini, Cristina Acidini, Mario Bellini, Enrico Colle and Manolo De Giorgi. The chapters deal with central themes such as Baroque splendour, marquetry, Rococo, Neoclassicism and the Italian Empire style.
