This volume was published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on the work of Georg Haupt (1741-1784), the most important Swedish ebenist of the Gustavian era and court jeweller to King Gustav III. The contributions illuminate Haupt's career from his training in Stockholm through his formative years in Paris and London to his style-defining role at the Swedish court.

His masterly command of construction and marquetry, his importance for the establishment of the Gustavian style and his international networking with leading European workshops are discussed. In addition to art-historical analyses, the book contains a detailed catalogue with numerous illustrations of his signed furniture from the royal collections and international museums.

The book thus represents the first comprehensive presentation of Haupt's work in the context of 18th century European furniture art and emphasises his role as a key figure in Swedish art and cultural history.
