This work is regarded as one of the most comprehensive reference works on Art Deco figurative representation. It deals with the development of decorative sculpture in the early 20th century, in particular the break with the late classical and romantic tradition of the 19th century towards a modern, stylised formal language of the 1920s and 1930s.
At the centre are figures made of bronze and ivory - often so-called chryselephantine sculptures - whose effect is created by the interplay of high-quality materials, precise craftsmanship and an emphatically elegant, rhythmic line. The figures reflect the attitude to life of the interwar period: movement, fashion, dance and a new urban culture characterise the motifs.
The book documents a wide range of artists and models and at the same time emphasises the quality of their craftsmanship and their position on the international collectors' market. Thanks to the large number of illustrations, it functions as a visual reference work for the identification and categorisation of Art Deco figures.

About the author:
Bryan Catley began as a collector and from this practice developed a systematic documentation of Art Deco figurines. His work is based both on his own collecting activities and on research in the art trade, which gives the book a strongly practice-orientated, collection-related character.
