This publication documents the results of a scientific conference on the exhibition Vornehmste Tischlerarbeiten aus Leipzig. F. G. Hoffmann – Hoftischler und Unternehmer and offers a broad overview of the life, work and workshop practice of Friedrich Gottlob Hoffmann (1741-1806), one of the leading German furniture makers of Classicism.

Around 50 selected pieces of furniture from Hoffmann's workshop are presented in detail, with expert contributions from restorers focussing in particular on construction, materials and technical features. This is supplemented by an in-depth biography as well as contextualising texts on the Leipzig carpenters' guild, furniture production around 1800 and the economic environment. The juxtaposition of handcrafted series production and traditional masterpieces conveys a differentiated picture of the cabinetmaker's art of the time.
