Helmut Krieg - Uhrmacher im Bergischen Land – Die Meister und ihre Werke

"Towards the end of the 17th century, a well-known and respected clockmaker called Johann Jacob Vogel lived and worked in Cologne on the Rhine. He began to build wall clocks..." This sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, but it is historically true: the clockmaking trade came to the Bergisches Land from Cologne and flourished here for almost 200 years in larger towns such as Solingen and Wuppertal, in smaller towns such as Radevormwald and Wermelskirchen - but also in rural communities in the Windecker Ländchen.
It was only industrial production at the end of the last century that put an end to the skilful manual production of clocks.

Helmut Krieg, a lover of Bergisch clocks, tells the story of the life and work of the Bergisch "masters" and describes their work, precisely and always with an eye for what is special in each case. Like "Dröppelmina" and pewter crockery, the "Bergische Uhren" are also telling documents of a bygone culture in the Bergisches Land - here "on display" in the 500 mostly colour illustrations in this picture book.
