This antique Italian side table impresses with its intricate marquetry work.
Marquetry" refers to a pattern of many veneers laid together.
These veneers had become detached from the support wood due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
Some veneers were lost, some were loose in a bag. There were missing parts on the entire table top as well as on the three-legged table leg.
In addition, the existing wood had faded, so that the beautiful contrasts of the marquetry work no longer really came into their own.
To permanently strengthen loose veneers, it is not enough to simply inject glue. We completely removed all even minimally loosened areas. After all the old glue residues had been removed, the pieces were glued on again over the entire surface and pressed down using clean and smooth shims.
Afterwards, the surface was sanded to smooth out any unevenness.
A new glueing of the three-legged base provides the new stability of the table.
The shellac polish ensures that the grain really comes into its own again and thus makes a significant contribution to the table's design.
