ISBN 3-7796-5055-X

This richly illustrated volume provides a well-founded overview of the development of Italian furniture art from the 16th to the 18th century. It deals with regional styles in Tuscany, northern Italy, Veneto, Liguria, Rome and southern Italy, highlighting characteristic features of furniture design in each case. A separate chapter is devoted to the typology of Italian chairs in the 16th century.

Particular attention is paid to the transition from Rococo to Classicism and to the work of Giuseppe Maggiolini, whose marquetry art reached its peak in the late 18th century. The numerous illustrations support the stylistic-historical analysis and make the book a vivid introduction to the regional diversity and artistic expressiveness of Italian furniture art.
