Katrin Heise - Sächsische und thüringische Biedermeiersekretäre

Katrin Heise's study is dedicated to Biedermeier secretaries from Saxony and Thuringia. Based on archival sources, signed objects and stylistic analyses, she presents a differentiated typology of this type of furniture in central Germany. The work thus makes a significant contribution to the regional furniture history of the 19th century.

The publication is of particular scholarly significance due to the comprehensive analysis of Saxon and Thuringian master craftsmen's examination drawings from the period. These sources, which had previously received little attention, enable a precise reconstruction of the standards of craftsmanship and constructional details in Biedermeier furniture making. They also demonstrate the extent to which the secretaries, as masterpieces, had to fulfil not only aesthetic but also technical and functional requirements.

The analysis of these drawings forms the methodological backbone of the work, with which Heise closes a central research gap and creates a solid foundation for further research into furniture production in the Biedermeier period - far beyond the Central German region.
