Mobilier provençal.
Paris: Éditions Massin. ISBN 978-2-7072-0283-3.
This book is dedicated to the antique furniture of Provence and describes a furniture tradition characterised by movement, liveliness and decorative expressiveness. It is characterised by curved shapes with pronounced gallows and counter-curves that lend the furniture an almost dance-like dynamism. The Provençal style is particularly close to Rococo, with asymmetrical ornaments, shell shapes and wave-like decorations dominating.
The furniture appears not only as utilitarian objects, but also as carriers of regional identity, characterised by light, landscape and a Mediterranean attitude to life. Ornamentation and design language take up maritime motifs as well as floral and mythological allusions. The presentation also emphasises the cultural anchoring of this furniture in the history and everyday life of Provence, whereby influences from the arts and crafts - such as faience production or painting - also become visible. Overall, the book conveys a picture of a particularly expressive, colourful and sophisticated furniture culture within France.
