Wolfgang Wiese - Die Zeichenmappe des Ebenisten Johannes Klinckerfuss (1770-1831)

The surviving portfolio of drawings by the Stuttgart ebenist Johannes Klinkerfuß (1770-1831) is an extraordinary document of southern German arts and crafts at the beginning of the 19th century. It comprises around 186 designs, most of which are by Klinkerfuß himself, but some of which can also be attributed to his nephew Bernhard Klinkerfuß and other contemporaries. The drawings not only document the design practice of a court benign in the environment of the Württemberg royal family, but also provide information about presentation strategies and workshop organisation at a time of stylistic and social upheaval. The care with which the sheets are executed is remarkable - they were evidently not used for technical execution, but for communication with clients. In their unity and diversity, they form a rare source for the study of courtly furniture art in southern Germany.
