This work offers a comprehensive overview of around 3000 years of European domestic culture and always presents furniture in the context of its architectural and social environment. The approach is deliberately holistic: individual pieces of furniture are not considered in isolation, but are shown in their function within historical interiors.
The richly illustrated picture section - with over 900 illustrations, including numerous colour plates - documents the development of central furniture types from antiquity to the present day. It is characterised by the juxtaposition of furniture and contemporaneous representations of rooms, making formal, functional and stylistic connections immediately apparent.
The introductory text follows the classical periodisation of art history and explicitly includes social and economic conditions. This makes the development of spatial art comprehensible not only stylistically, but also in terms of cultural history. The book is therefore aimed at collectors and dealers as well as readers seeking a deeper understanding of historical interior design.
