Narrow Antique Biedermeier Cabinet with Secret Compartment

Hesse/Palatinate
Walnut etc.
Biedermeier around 1840

Dimensions: H x W x D: 161 x 95 x 49 cm

Description:
Narrow, slender and well proportioned secretary from the late Biedermeier period circa 1840.
Fantastic veneer pattern on the furniture front and sides.

The front is divided into three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above and another drawer at the top. The top drawer is slightly convex, which is typical of the time and region.
The wild-grained walnut veneer is laid in perfect symmetry and has been given a tremendous depth by the shellac polish. Here, the wood comes to life and appears in all its natural beauty!
The discreet brass key plates blend harmoniously into the overall picture.

If we open the writing flap, we see a multi-coloured and yet very tidy interior.
To the left and right of the large, open compartment, which is divided by a base, are two rows of drawers, each with four mahogany-veneered drawers on top of each other.
The lower row consists of three drawers, the outer ones with a masonry marquetry design and the middle one that can only be opened by a secret mechanism. (See video)
The upper row picks up the light colour tone as well as the three-part division of the lower row.
Here, however, it is a single wide thrust. In the centre, it is designed by a fire-shaded fan chain series.

Fun Facts:
The piece of furniture, like most pieces that have survived from the period, is of excellent craftsmanship. Of course, all the corner joints are neatly pinned. In the one photo where the top drawer of the interior has been removed, the mortise and tenon joints of the timbers can be clearly seen. Certainly interesting for those who are enthusiastic about classic handmade wooden joints.

Condition: Finished restored and shellac polished. The drawers run smoothly, the locks work.
