Description:
Exceptional side table from around 1840, very rare to find in this fineness.
A shaft shaped like a corkscrew column rises from the centre of a three-legged substructure. The wood nestles in a spiral around an iron rod encased in brass with absolute precision.
Carving and turning work of this quality requires the highest level of craftsmanship.
The table top is absolutely unique. Framed by acanthus vines, we see a couple in the forest. She is sitting on a stone with a jug in her hand, he is standing with his arm raised and a shotgun hanging over his shoulder.
It is not only the intricacy of the inlay work that is impressive, but also the quality of the materials used. In addition to brass, pewter and copper, we also see ivory, mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell. Some of the perfectly preserved and razor-sharp engravings can only be recognised with a magnifying glass. Take a look at the highly magnified detailed photo of the lady to see, for example, the design of the blouse, the fineness of the eyebrow or the drapery of the scarf.
Pieces of furniture like this never cease to amaze me with the perfection of the cabinetmakers of the time...
