Classicism around 1790
Dimensions: H x W x D: 111 x 119 x 60 cm
Description:
Well proportioned writing desk standing on carved round feet.
The bureau consists of one piece, but is visually divided into two parts: the commode-like base and the writing section above. The fronts are each triple panelled, with fine fillet bands separating the walnut veneered panels from their surroundings.
Fire-shaded coin bands adorn both the skirting board and the corresponding profile between the top and bottom sections.
The sides and top of the unit are designed to match the front.
The large lock mounted in the top drawer also locks the bottom drawer.
The cylinder lock opens automatically by pulling out the work surface using the two brass knobs. This rounded surface consists of several cross strips glued together, whose angular, multi-edged basic shape was first planed, then sanded and then veneered after gluing.
It is impressive to see that this round panel, made entirely by hand, has not warped a bit over the course of more than two centuries and still runs absolutely cleanly and smoothly in the guide provided for it. Respect for this craftsmanship!
The simple work area consists of the solid softwood top and four lockable cherry veneered drawers.
Condition: Refurbished, suitable for everyday use and polished with shellac.
Price: 4500,- €
