Marquetry

Finely marketed stand secretary

France
Rosewood, mahogany a.o.
Louis XVI style, around 1890

Dimensions: H x W x D: 141 x 71 x 37 cm

Description:
Straight-lined secretary, oak veneered with rosewood. Strict geometric structure by inlaid fillet bands of light-dark contrasting woods.
The feet taper conically downwards and end in brass sabots.

In the lower part of the secretary are two doors, behind them are two open compartments.

Above this is the front-opening writing flap, which is decorated with elaborate marquetry. We see all-round cranked lines and a central medallion with a domestic scene. Depicted are a mother and daughter studying at home. They seem to come from a good family as they have high quality furniture and expensive clothes.
The inlay is made of various precious woods, some of which are colourfully dyed.
If you open the writing flap, you see an interior with four drawers and four open compartments.
A leather surface serves as a writing surface.

Above the writing compartment is another drawer.
The upper finish is a white marble top.

The sides of the secretary are also beautifully veneered with geometric inlays.

Condition:
Restored, very good condition. Shellac hand polish. The original leather is brittle but still in good condition, it has been treated with special leather care. The marble top has an old, professionally repaired break.
