Beautiful pair of shovel chairs in walnut.
Tapered and slightly flared square legs.
Wide, concavely indented and laterally rounded shoulder rests, reminiscent of the shape of a shovel - hence the name "shovel chair".
Ebonised struts in the back board.
Condition:
Restored condition. Authentic age patina. Shellac hand polish. Newly upholstered, newly covered.

Shovel chairs are among the best known variations from the Biedermeier palette of chair forms.
They appear from around 1825 onwards and, with their rounded shoulder rests, herald the departure from the strict rectilinearity of the early 19th century.
