Yew, burl wood
Mid 19th century
Dimensions: 72 x 90 x 49 cm
Description:
Exceptional small chest of drawers with veneers laid to resemble parquetry. Yew and (birch) burl in saw veneer thickness.
The piece of furniture stands on a total of six ball feet.
Very strongly curved front with three doors.
Behind the left door we see three original drawers, the fronts of which follow the shape of the corpus, and an open compartment.
Behind the right and middle door is a set of drawers with a total of nine drawers. The drawers were inserted later, probably in the middle of the 20th century. The craftsmanship was good and professional, the drawers and also the construction are solidly finished.
The sides are also curved in design.
Condition:
The piece of furniture has been restored ready for living. The veneers are solid, the locks work perfectly. The surface has been polished with shellac to only a slight sheen.
In an older restoration, the back panel was slit, presumably because it had "warped" quite a bit. The slitting helps to bring the wood back into the right position. In the course of this, the uppermost crossbar on the back wall was probably also added.
From below, the wood was doubled in one place to stabilise the base.
Price: This piece of furniture has already been sold. Comparable objects in quality and condition are priced at about 3000,-€ to 4000,-€.
