Antique Biedermeier bookcase with full columns

Southern Germany (Baden)

Biedermeier around 1825

Dimensions: H x W x D: 213 x 117 x 48 cm

Description:
Antique display cabinet from the south-west German Biedermeier period around 1825.

Two-part piece of furniture standing on unusual semicircular feet. The cabinet-like base has a beautiful and very harmoniously laid walnut burl pattern. Behind the two doors there is a large storage space with a shelf. The grain of the sides matches the quality of the front.

The top of the display cabinet is set back by around 15 cm. The full columns to the left and right of the glazed doors are impressive and have a decisive influence on the shape of the furniture, supporting the cornice that extends forwards. Also worth mentioning is the veneer on the doors, which is mitred both on the corners and on the central crosspiece.
The ebonised columns and key plates contrast sharply with the warm colour of the wood.
The interior of the upper section is fitted with three height-adjustable shelves. The sides, back panel and toothed strips are finished in white.

In addition to the slender proportions, I particularly like the unusual, free-standing pillar system, which gives the piece of furniture its architectural character.
As a piece of display furniture, the cabinet really comes into its own with the objects you bring into your home. The white interior surfaces are then no longer dominant, but serve as a simple and neutral background for your books, porcelain or collector's items.

Condition:
Restored and suitable for everyday use with a shellac hand polish.

Price: 6800,-€

An identical piece of furniture is known from the literature, which also has the same veneer pattern. It is possible that the two bookcases were made as a pair or were once part of a larger library. However, they were certainly built according to the same drawing and in the same workshop.
