Rosewood and others
early 20th century
Dimensions: H x D: 31 x 73 cm
Description:
Rare and extremely solidly crafted roulette wheel from the early 20th century.
The solid and heavy body is veneered in rosewood and ebonised on the outside. The rim is emphasised by two circumferential inlaid brass threads.
In contrast to comparable objects, the numbers are not painted or printed, but finely marquetried, i.e. inlaid in wood.
The turning mechanism is robustly crafted and highly precise: rotation is achieved via a classic centre bearing, in which a tapered pin runs in a hollow grooved socket. This point bearing minimises friction and ensures exceptionally smooth, long running - even after all these decades, the kettle still turns smoothly for over a minute.
The three feet were added during the restoration so that the roulette wheel, which is actually embedded in the surface, can be placed freely on the table. Of course, the wheel could also be set back into a plate with a corresponding recess.
The table top could then be covered with the green roulette cloth from John Huxley in London, the leading manufacturer of professional casino equipment in the 20th century. The cloth comes from the casino in Bad Wiessee, bears authentic traces of age and use and is included in the scope of delivery. It has the typical cut shape for professional roulette tables with slots for inserting chips. Cloth dimensions approx: 370 x 110 cm.
