Antique Biedermeier secretary

Dimensions: H x W x D: 156 x 100 x 53 cm

Description:
Very interesting writing cabinet from the Bohemian/Austrian Biedermeier period around 1830.

Body standing on ashlar feet with two doors at the bottom, the writing flap above and a head with drawer supported by fluted columns. A profiled, slightly protruding moulding with the top panel resting on it forms the upper end of the piece of furniture.
The grain pattern, laid in strict symmetry, is interrupted by the original and regionally typical key plates made of very finely embossed sheet brass. The beautiful quality of the fittings can be clearly seen in one of the attached photos.
The lines of the lower doors are interesting, with their curved shape almost flush with the centre of the columns, creating a very harmonious overall appearance. The transition to the straight writing surface is created by a beaded crosspiece. The builder of the piece of furniture has done a good job here, not only in the planning of the furniture, but above all in the craftsmanship.
The doors are locked using the original old bar lock, which closes upwards and downwards.

The writing compartment is spectacularly equipped with eight drawers of different sizes, some of which are compartmentalised.
There are also three open compartments divided by four flat pilasters to keep things tidy. The large centre compartment is mirrored on the back, which closes the semicircle applied to the base in the finest ink painting to form a circle.
The shelf underneath the centre drawer is movable. Beneath it, well hidden, are two secret drawers. The fronts of these drawers, which are certainly rarely used, are veneered in oak and blend in well with the generally very high quality of the furniture.
The writing surface and work surface are polished black, as are the flat Schinkel pediment and the framing of the single dish.

Condition:
Very beautiful, restored condition with a classic shellac hand polish.
