Chest of drawers with marquetry in Louis XVI style

France
Marble, exotic woods
End of 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 87 x 94 x 50 cm

Description:
Two-tiered and unusually delicate chest of drawers with fine Louis XVI style marquetry, standing on pointed legs.

The drawers are worked sans traverse. The marquetry panels divide the piece of furniture into an upper and a lower section, regardless of the drawer height - they also divide the front of the furniture vertically. The middle section protrudes from the surface like a risalit and emphasises the vertical structure.
Framed by light and dark contrasting bands, we see fields of star-shaped engraved lemon wood at the top. The lower panels are veneered in amaranth, in the centre we see engraved floral inlays in an oval medallion.

The sparsely attached fittings are limited to a brass key guide and four discreet pull rings. Nothing should distract the observer's gaze from the finely crafted wood. For this reason, a lock in the top drawer has been omitted; the bottom lock locks both drawers.

The upper end is formed by the original, suitably cut plate made of Pyrenean serpentine stone, which follows the shape of the body.

Condition:
Restored, authentic condition with minor veneer replacements. Shellac hand polish.
