Antique ladies' desk - so-called Secretaire en Pente

France
Rosewood
second half of 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 99 x 92 x 49 cm

Description:
Impressively beautiful and with finest woods marked inclined flap desk, so-called Secretaire en Pente.

Piece of furniture made in the style of Louis XV with curved legs, sawn out base frame and discreetly moving corpus.
Framed by friezes and thread inlays, we see fields with the finest cube marquetry. The different coloured woods as well as the skilfully laid grain courses give the inlay work an incredible depth and three-dimensionality. The shellac polish enhances this unique character.

At the front, there is a wide drawer at the bottom, a narrow drawer above and on the outside, and the hinged slanted flap at the top, which is held in place by iron hinges. The working surface created by the opening is covered with brown leather embossed all around.
The interior consists of two drawers on the outside, which build on each other like a staircase, and a wide, open compartment at the very top. The central open compartment has a double bottom, which can be moved to open the secret compartment underneath.

An outstandingly crafted piece of furniture. A true testament to the high art of furniture making in the 19th century.

Condition: Restored and shellac polished. Sturdy writing furniture suitable for everyday use.
