Louis XVI corner cabinet with marquetry

Southern Germany
Walnut, maple
Classicism around 1790

Dimensions: H x W x D: 222 x 98 x 55 cm, side depth: 66 cm

Description:
Slim and well-proportioned corner cabinet from the southern German classicism.

The body stands on pointed legs and has a triangular basic shape.
The front gives the impression of having two doors with the attached moulding and the two keyhole fittings. In reality, however, there is only one door, hinged on the right.
The door is symmetrically designed by the four dominant panels framed by dark thread inlays, which are veneered with walnut in a perfect mirror finish. Similar panels in a simpler style can also be found on the pilaster strips.

The elaborate yet restrained marquetry is of a particularly beautiful quality.
Restrained because they are made exclusively from maple, so there are no major colour variations. Elaborate because they are not only finely engraved, but also have a beautiful depth effect thanks to the well-made fire shading. As the surface of the wood has not only been carefully and gently cleaned by us, but also in previous restorations, and sanding has been completely avoided, these fine works are completely undamaged and in almost original condition. An absolutely desirable condition.
We see artistically designed flowers and rosettes, fine friezes and ribbons as well as laurel wreaths held by festoons in the area of the keyholes.

The upper end is formed by the gallery, which was only preserved in fragments at the time of purchase and whose openwork was reconstructed in the course of the restoration.

When the door is open, we can see the large, original box lock. The frame and panel construction of the door is also striking when open. The crossbars are neatly connected to the upright timbers by means of slots and tenons. This detail can be clearly seen in one of the photos.
The interior is divided by four shelves.

Restored, very authentic state of preservation. Shellac hand polish.
