ISBN: 3-422-06379-X
Achim Stiegel's standard work is the most comprehensive academic study to date of Berlin furniture art between the late rococo, classicism and early historicism periods. It focuses on Berlin's development into a leading centre of furniture production in the German-speaking world - on a par with Vienna - from the late 18th to the mid-19th century.
Stiegel examines Berlin furniture art from the point of view of art, social and economic history as well as material and technical history. Particular attention is paid to the craftsmanship, the use of typical woods and fittings, the development of technical innovations and the organisation of furniture production in Berlin workshops. In his study, Achim Stiegel recognises for the first time the high quality and diversity of this furniture production, which was largely forgotten due to the political upheavals of the 20th century. His focus is on analysing the writing furniture, which as an exemplary type of furniture reflects the aesthetic and functional principles of Berlin furniture art particularly clearly. He has thus created a basis for a better academic understanding and categorisation of Berlin furniture and has made a significant contribution to the understanding of Berlin furniture art in the early 19th century.
Achim Stiegel, born in 1965, is an art historian and curator of the furniture collection at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin. His dual qualification as a furniture restorer and art historian characterises the work presented here, which always combines the technical level of craftsmanship with art historical analysis.
