Asenbaum, Paul / Asenbaum, Stefan / Witt-Dörring, Christian (Eds.): Modern Past 1800-1900. Furniture, Metal, Ceramics, Glass, Textiles, Designs - from Vienna
Exhibition catalogue, Künstlerhaus Vienna, 21 May - 9 August 1981
Vienna 1981

The catalogue Modern Past 1800-1900 was published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Vienna Künstlerhaus from 21 May to 9 August 1981. It examines furniture, metalwork, ceramics, glass, textiles and designs from 19th century Vienna. The focus is on the search for a simple, functional design and its historical precursors around 1800. The contributions address the role of everyday objects and furniture in bourgeois everyday life, the significance of utility and constructive design as well as the cultural self-image of the late 19th century. The aim of the exhibition and the publication is to show the continuities between the past and modernity and to emphasise the timeless value of certain designs regardless of changing fashions.
