The residential palace of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach with its complete collection of historical furniture is a jewel of German furniture history. The excellently preserved furnishings include above all magnificent 18th-century sculptural and ebony furniture, four quarters of which are published for the first time in this volume and presented in 122 catalogue numbers. Several generations of court artists created around 400 pieces of furniture. In addition, in 1728 some magnificent furniture was acquired for the margravial prince in Paris, but works from Berlin were also added. Finally, the court also purchased some English pieces before the last margrave abdicated in 1791 and spent the rest of his life in England.
Because of their firm artistic and historical embedding, the Ansbach furniture has always been regarded as a key object of 18th century German furniture making. Occupying a special position within German Rococo, it spans the period from the fading Régence through the flourishing Rococo to the age of Classicism.
for this volume, all the furniture has been photographed for the first time and commented on in detail in terms of furniture history and technology. In his introduction, the author, Christoph Graf von Pfeil, provides the historical and art-historical context for understanding Ansbach's heyday.
