Cornet / Willscheid - Möbel à la Roentgen

The exhibition catalogue Möbel à la Roentgen is dedicated to the workshop culture of the famous Neuwied manufactory of Abraham and David Roentgen. The focus is not only on the well-known work of the Roentgen family, but in particular on the achievements of their highly specialised employees - craftsmen who were sometimes only responsible for individual tasks such as veneer work, inlay techniques or mechanical constructions.

The book documents pieces of furniture by these employees and later workshop successors - including writing furniture, chests of drawers and tables - which were presented for the first time as part of the exhibition at the Roentgen Museum in Neuwied.

In the accompanying scholarly articles, renowned authors - including Christine Cornet, Florian Eibinger, Ian D. Fowler, Burkhardt Göres, Wolfram Koeppe, Jens Kremb, Ulrich Leben, Miriam Schefzyk, Michael Sulzbacher, Thorsten Weil, Wolfgang Wiese and Bernd Willscheid - shed light on key aspects of the manufactory: from stylistic and technical innovations to the division of labour and international marketing.

The result is a multifaceted picture of a workshop that set standards throughout Europe with its furniture and its entrepreneurial self-image and is still considered influential for the courtly living culture of the late 18th century.
