Part 1 (France) deals with important clockmakers such as Ferdinand & Louis Berthoud, the Lepaute family, Robert Robin (1742-1799), Antide Janvier (1751-1835), Abraham Louis Breguet, Jean Antoine Lépine, Le Roy and Leroy, Bourdier, Jacob and Jarossay as well as the Louis Leroy et Cie workshop in Paris; French long and wall regulators are also presented.
Part 2 (Germany) is dedicated to Riefler, Strasser & Rohde and other German manufacturers.
Part 3 (America, with contributions by Donald Saff) deals with American precision pendulum clocks.
Part 4 (20th century) examines F. M. Fedchenko and his astronomical pendulum clocks (G. Feinstein), the Littlemore Clock (E. T. Hall) and current developments in the quest for maximum accuracy (Philip Woodward).
About the author: Derek Roberts worked in watchmaking for over 35 years and ran an internationally renowned business in Tonbridge, England. he was awarded the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1977 and was admitted to the Livery a year later. He acquired, researched, restored and sold a wide range of clocks, always with comprehensive documentation and photography. From this material he produced several reference books on different types of clocks such as: Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks, The British Longcase Clock andmystery, Novelty & Fantasy Clocks.
