This work, written by Heidrun Zinnkann, is the most comprehensive study to date on furniture production in Mainz in the early 19th century. While the furniture art of the 18th century in Mainz is well documented in art history, this work is the first to systematically illuminate the achievements and structures of cabinetmakers in the Biedermeier period.

At the centre of the study are the three most important Mainz cabinetmakers of this period: Wolfgang Knussmann, Wilhelm Kimbel and Anton Bembé. Zinnkann presents their biographies, workshop structures, clientele and furniture designs. The study illustrates the transition from handcrafted production to factory production and emphasises the importance of pattern books, construction drawings and original supply catalogues.
