Augarde, Jean-Dominique: A Journey Through Clocks. Masterworks of the Parnassia Collection. Volume 2: The Pendules "au Noir"

ISBN 978-2-87844-315-8 (together with vol. 1 in slipcase).

The second volume of A Journey Through Clocks is dedicated to the highly specialised field of so-called "Pendules au Noir" - French figurative clocks from the late 18th and early 19th centuries whose depictions take up African or colonial motifs. Following Elke Niehüser's research on the subject in the book "Die französische Bronzeuhr", this book, with over forty selected objects from the Parnassia Collection, is now an important reference work on this remarkable genre in terms of both art and cultural history.

Jean-Dominique Augarde names and analyses the contexts in which these clocks were created and their iconographic sources. In this book, we learn a great deal about Jean-Simon Deverberie, the most important maker of this type of clock. In addition to rare clocks of this type, the famous African figures in working scenes are also dealt with in great detail.

Together with Volume 1: Classical Clocks, this volume forms a complete ensemble for the Parnassia Collection.
