Torsten Sylvén's work Stolens guldålder ("The Golden Age of the Chair") is dedicated to the development of chair making in Sweden from the mid-17th to the mid-19th century - an era he characterises as the "Golden Age" of Swedish furniture art.

The book offers an annotated compilation of all the important Swedish chairmakers of this period, richly illustrated with numerous signed chairs. In addition to chair makers, Sylvén also includes related professions such as wood turners, sculptors, upholsterers, gilders and furniture dealers, creating a comprehensive picture of the furniture trade between 1650 and 1850.

Particular attention is paid to the organisation and working methods of the chairmakers' guilds. The work documents around 130 signatures and labels, supplemented by scale drawings of chair legs from Stockholm workshops. Sylvén thus provides a central aid for the attribution and dating of Swedish seating furniture.

The author, himself a cabinetmaker and furniture restorer, combines expert craftsmanship with art-historical analysis.
