Walnut
Biedermeier around 1830
Dimensions: H x W x D: 95 x 118 x 60 cm
Description:
Four-tier chest of drawers standing on unusually shaped pointed feet. The front of the furniture is veneered with symmetrically laid walnut, the ebonised elements contrast beautifully with the warm colour of the wood.
The flat arched segmentation of the upper drawer, which appears to be supported on the outside by the pilasters, creates an architectural appearance. The set stone at the apex of the arch is aligned with the coat of arms-shaped key plates.
The upper front can be folded down and used as a writing and working surface. Unlike most other chests of drawers of the time, the writing surface is fixed in place and is not pushed back and forth along with the entire writing drawer. On the one hand, this has the advantage that the internal drawers have a greater depth than usual and, on the other hand, they are still at the front, i.e. in a usable position, even when the writing surface is pushed in.
The writing surface is polished black with an all-round walnut edge.
Condition:
Restored while preserving the patina and hand-polished with shellac. Signs of age and use have been deliberately preserved and conserved. The drawers run cleanly and smoothly, the locks work. The chest of drawers is authentic and suitable for everyday use.
