Bright secretary with secret compartments

Saxony
Birch, mahogany a.o.
Biedermeier around 1830

Dimensions: H x W x D: 172 x 105 x 52 (92) cm

Description:
Writing cabinet standing on massive feet following the shape of the corpus.
Three large drawers in the lower section, the lowest slightly protruding as is typical for the region.

Above this is the hinged writing tablet and a very impressive interior. This consists of a central open compartment surrounded by six drawers of different sizes. In addition, there are two pull-out drawers with compartments for letters, papers and the like.
The interior impresses with beautiful marquetry inspired by the architecture. On the lower wide drawer we find a so-called masonry marquetry, above it small inlaid pilasters that lead over to round arch segments. At the top centre we see an ornamental inlay in mahogany on a maple ground.
Behind the drawers are some secret compartments.

Above the interior there is another obvious drawer, as well as two more hidden in the cornice and gallery.

The key escutcheons and handles are ebonised, the light wood on the exterior contrasting nicely with the dark interior.

Condition:
Restored to a living room standard, shellac polished condition. Flawless in function, free of worm infestation.

Price: This secretary is no longer available. Similar models cost approx. 5000,- € to 6000,- € at Galerie Balbach.
