Louis XVI Desk and Dressing Table

Italy
Walnut, plum, cherry tree
Louis XVI around 1800

Dimensions: H x W x D: 81 x 79 x 46 cm

Description:
Small and rare dressing, writing and work table with elaborate inlay work.

Straight, square legs made of solid walnut, standing in brass sabots and tapering downwards. Following the shape of the legs, we see full-surface inlays with all-round thread inlay.
In their upward extension, the legs serve as supporting pillars for the box structure, meaning that the piece of furniture is designed as a gallery construction. The design of the legs is also continued in the upper section.

The high frame of the cabinet accommodates three drawers at the front, the fronts of which are framed in dark mahogany wood. Surrounded by dark, geometric banding on a light background, the surfaces are veneered in diagonally positioned plum wood. The same design can also be found on the sides of the furniture.

The marquetry on the top panel of the cabinet is also spectacular. The inlay work here is even more elaborate and forms the perfect frame for the central parquetry in the oval medallion.

The top can be opened and locked in place with the help of an iron hinge. A large, faceted mirror is mounted on the inside. When the table top is open, the overall height is 123 cm.

Condition:
Restored, very authentic condition with wonderful age patina and a beautiful, warm colour that has matured over decades.
