Antique corner cabinet with geometric marquetry

France
Mahogany, marble, brass
Transition around 1770

Dimensions: Height: 88 cm, width: 85 cm, side depth: 59 cm

Description:
Unusual, half-height corner cabinet from the transitional period between Louis XV and Louis XVI (Epoque Transition) with a still curved front but already strictly geometric inlays.

The two-door body stands on block feet, the base and pilaster strips of which are emphasised by recessed brass profiles.
The doors are designed in an extravagant style with diamond and flat marquetry. Dark bands accompanied by brass threads form the frame for the central field veneered in yew and the neatly mitred rectangle of light satinwood.
The surrounding mahogany is discreetly subdued compared to the other woods and forms the perfect background for the stylish brass inlays.
The austerity of the marquetry is softened by the slight curve of the doors.

The loose Breche d'Alep marble top follows the shape of the furniture front. The back of the slab shows the typical, unfinished broken edge - an authentic feature of original 18th century stone slabs.

Condition:
The furniture is in very good condition and suitable for everyday use with an authentic patina of age. All inlays have been consolidated and the surface has been refreshed with a hand-applied shellac polish.
