Scandinavia
Birch
Mid 19th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 132 x 91 x 47 cm, working height: 75 cm
Description:
Very neatly crafted piece of furniture in unusually small dimensions with a particularly interesting interior.
The front is divided into three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above and another drawer at the top. The heavily flamed birch wood is interrupted by diamond-shaped key escutcheons inserted from solid ebony, the vertical divisions of the pilasters and by a fire-shaded compartment inlay on the front of the top drawer.
The original snap locks are unusual for the time, as they were originally used more in the 18th century. This shows once again that not only stylistic but also technical innovations became standard in the provinces of Scandinavia only decades later than in Central Europe.
The architecturally influenced interior is completely handleless. We see three drawers side by side with masonry marquetry below. Above them rises a portal-like structure with shaded columns of Ionic order, round-arched compartments and drawers divided by fillet bands.
The lower drawers can be opened by rotating masonry blocks, then the drawers above them can be moved. The central door is held under tension by a leaf spring and opens by pressing a push-button. There are three small drawers inside.
The writing flap is held by iron hinges.
Condition:
Restored and in good condition for everyday use. Shellac hand polish. The drawers run well, all locks work. The feet have been replaced.
