Antique dressing table with an interesting mechanism and original fittings

A mahogany table on castors with a glazed frame and cross-braced legs.

Even when closed, the high standard of craftsmanship evident in this piece of furniture is clear to see. It is crafted from carefully selected mahogany, framed by a silver-plated surround which is seamlessly finished at the corners.
The tabletop can be raised and locks into place automatically. Hidden within the top are fold-out mirrored panels. The original, faceted mirror panes are slightly tarnished due to age but are perfectly usable and authentic. The mirrored panels are also framed by carefully crafted, silver-plated mouldings.

The highlight of the table is its dressing compartment, which rises automatically when the glass panels are folded up. It is equipped with numerous accessories such as vials, small jars and bottles made of cut crystal glass, hand mirrors, brushes and combs in various sizes, scissors, small knives, tweezers, curling tongs and a shoehorn. The fittings are not simply added as an afterthought or purchased separately at a later date; rather, they were designed from the outset as an integral part of the piece and are perfectly integrated.
The silver items are all hallmarked. Each bears the German silver hallmark featuring a crescent moon and a crown, as well as the fineness mark 800. There is also an additional hallmark, which is presumably the maker’s mark.
The set is complete and is, on the whole, in good visual condition. The lids on two of the silver vials are loose. Two teeth are broken off one of the combs, and the bristles are missing from the small nail brush.

Beneath the frame box is a pull-out tray which serves as an additional storage surface and, when open, provides access to the mechanism situated above it.

Condition:
Restored and in a very authentic condition.
