Baroque chest of drawers

Hesse / Thuringia
Walnut
around 1760

Dimensions: H x W x D: 82 x 121 x 66 cm

Description:
Gorgeous baroque chest of drawers with beautiful proportions and fantastic marquetry work.

Thick walnut veneer on softwood.

Three-sided chest of drawers standing on ball feet.
The front is concave-convex curved, the top follows this shape. The skirting board and the edge of the top are made of individual pieces of end-grain wood laid together, typical of the time and region.
The drawers are geometrically fielded by wide strips of plum wood. In addition, we see narrow thread inlays of maple.
The original fittings are made of ornamentally embossed sheet brass, the locks are also original.
Typical of the period are the shelves, which are butt-fastened with wooden nails under the drawer corbels. All the drawer corner joints are neatly dovetailed.

The sides of the chest of drawers are given structure by simple fielding.

The special highlight of the piece of furniture is the finely marked top plate.
The surrounding edge is veneered with straight-grained walnut, the structure of the wood corresponds to that of the front and side of the chest of drawers. The veneer is mitred at the front corners.
The central field is veneered in burl with inlays in plum and maple. In the centre we see a cartouche showing a fruit basket in engraved and fire shaded maple.

On the back panel there is an old adhesive label proving a transport from Erfurt to Eisenach.

Condition:
Restored condition ready for living. The drawers run well and smoothly, the locks work perfectly.
