Dimensions: H x W x D: 200 x 110 x 54 cm

Description:
Architecturally constructed writing desk of absolutely masterly quality.

A top-mounted desk on block feet with three drawers in the lower section, the lowest of which protrudes slightly, typical of the time and region. Above this is the writing flap and a further wide drawer. Two external three-quarter columns emphasise the overall architectural impression of the piece of furniture.
The single-door top, the so-called hatbox compartment, is separated by a multi-profiled and stepped entablature. The slightly curved centre door is flanked by a total of four thin columns. These support the cornice, which forms the upper end of the secretaire in the form of a central risalit with a final Schinkel roof.

The closed appearance of the cabinet is harmonious and self-contained thanks to the neatly mirrored birch veneer, fine ebony inlays and restrained, light-coloured keyhole surrounds.

The spectacular interior contrasts with the simple exterior. Here, veneered in mahogany and birch, we see a central door with surrounding drawers and a pull-out writing surface covered in leather at the bottom.
The top drawer is visually divided into three sections with a central arch. The arch is designed with fan-shaped and brand-shaded wood.
The fronts of the interior are also geometrically veined with fine lines. The light-coloured pull knobs are a deliberate contrast and contribute significantly to the design of the interior.

Worth knowing:
The design of this secretary fits in with the masterpiece ordinance that came into force in Brunswick in 1814. While the early masterpiece designs before 1820 still appeared somewhat heavier, this secretary with its columns, slender proportions and rich interior is typical of the years 1825-1835[cf. Franz-Josef Christiani - Schreibmöbelentwürfe zu Meisterstücken Braunschweiger Tischler aus der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts].

Similarly designed writing furniture is known from Brandenburg and Berlin.

Condition:
Restored and authentic condition. Beautiful age patina. Shellac polished surface.
The drawers run smoothly and smoothly, the writing surface is stable at right angles to the body.

Price: This secretary is already sold. Comparable objects in terms of quality and age are priced at around 7500 to 10000.
