Description:
Fancy and rare fire-gilt mantel clock from the Empire period around 1810.
A young woman is depicted reading on a recamiere. The tips of the thin fabric of her robe are finely chased with floral elements.
The noble piece of furniture on which the young lady is lying is decorated with tendrils and blossoms. The garlands hanging downwards are still typical design elements of the Directoire.
"The motif of a young woman dressed à la grecque, elegantly reclining on an antique-style chaise longue, was made famous by the painting by Jacques Louis David (1748-1825) showing Madame Récamier on the piece of furniture later named after her. The no less famous Paolina Borghese, Napoleon's sister, was also depicted by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) in a similar reclining position - albeit almost naked."
